Finding my hobbies

Writer: Tara MeikleTara Meikle

The warmer it gets outside, the more I find myself longing to spend more time outdoors. I suppose that’s not all that unusual, really. Even as somebody who appreciates the good things that winter brings (or bad things it takes away), I have had an emotionally taxing winter season and the snow melting away is like breathing new life into my ambitions.

However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, it can be much more difficult for a person to spend time outdoors. That is why, even though I don't necessarily live out in the boonies or anything, I feel incredibly fortunate to live out of town where I can plant my own garden and have space to run with my dogs in my yard.

Still, it’s difficult not to feel a little jilted by the whole situation. While I didn’t really get out too much before, I did appreciate being able to stop by the thrift store and just browse. I think that’s the biggest thing I miss; being able to take my time in the stores and just browse.

Clearly I need a better hobby. 😂

In the weeks since this all began, I’ve started to find alternative outlets for my energy. Even though photography is something I was into before, even going so far as to sign up for a course at the local arts council, (which has since been postponed indefinitely….) I’ve noticed myself being more encouraged to just take my camera out and see what cool shots I can get.

As of right now, that mostly consists of my dogs being my main subjects. 😬

Still, though. I’ve been flexing my creative muscles and doing research, finding new ways to express myself and perhaps helping decide which direction I would like to take with my photography.
